Babukusu
are known for their diversity of their clans. They are different: chikholo che
Burwa (aligned to Kalenjin), che Bunyala (from Banyala), che Silikwa (formed
after Silkiwa dispersal wars), che Bumasai (assimilated from Masai), che Bumasaaba
(from Ebugisu, UG) and che Ebuyumbu (aligned to Tachoni).
Other
types include: chikheba (give circumcision doctors), che bubasi (black smithery),
chirera kamaarara (control hailstones), chikimba efula (rain-making powers),
chisolosya kamang’u (conjure orges), chiselusya enjofu (elephant herders),
chiswala kumusee (give public speakers), che ekutusi (ruling class), chichasila
eng’enda (avoid tan cows), chichuba kumukasa (wear elder’s copper bracelets), chikhalia
engokho (avoid chicken meat), chichumba embongo (avoid deer meat) and chisicha
(offer clan secrets) among others.

Whenever I see my clan (Bakhali) represented,I quickly conclude the list is comprehensive and complete because, our clan is not so well known......
ReplyDeleteYaa you occupied sikata some parts, wamunyiri and chebukwa but which gates are you (bakhali)
DeleteOrio mno bandu base
DeleteEKHOLO YANGA MAYI WASE bakongolo sekhengibona tawe - atuti, kibabii
DeleteHi, Helen, eyino seli complete list ta yaya. Bakongolo bosi babakho
DeleteSenabone bakolati tawe
ReplyDeletebalikho kuka
DeleteBandsmen twa?
ReplyDeleteI mean Baneembe?
ReplyDeleteBaneembe is a clan in Bukusu. How are they referred to? Is it bakikayi?
DeleteWase baliuli baamile wae?
ReplyDeleteComprehensive, lakini ungesema gani ndio ziko aligned wapi
ReplyDeleteSure, that needs a lot of digging...hopefully we will do that
DeleteOmwami Munialo, khulanga khuli Mutonyi Wanabukelembe namwe Mutonyi Bukelmbe? What is the difference?
DeleteThe correct name is Mutonyi wa Bukelembe, son of Bukelembe (father) and Nakhumwa (mother). If anyone writes Nabukelembe, it is incorrect since Nabukelembe was not his mother's name.
DeleteBakwangwachi are Abanyala though believed to be an offshoot of Bakwangwa. The two do not intermary.
ReplyDeletethey are bukusu too just like baengele
DeleteBatilu and Bamutilu are not the same as is implied.
Deleteorio muno yaya, ndebha ndi batukwika basakha ne basaakha bhaukhana?
ReplyDeletebamurwa babecheteka nabho balala si?
ne bakipemuli nabo?
ReplyDeleteBakimepuli bhaukhana ne bakipemuli?
ReplyDeleteorio muno yaya, ndebha ndi batukwika basakha ne basaakha bhaukhana?
ReplyDeletebamurwa babecheteka nabho balala si?
As time goes, we will find good answers to these questions. The write up was just a summary
DeleteThanks for good research, though not comprehensive. Baasiabo, banamulinge, bakhoma, balunduu,
ReplyDeleteVery right, we will update in due time
DeleteYou make me mixed up can you mention only the bukusu clan. Because you have mention clans from different tribes like bailifuma from bunyala, babutu from bagisu etc.
ReplyDeleteThey may not just be Bukusu Clans..but affiliated to Bukusu clans
DeleteYou make me mixed up can you mention only the bukusu clan. Because you have mention clans from different tribes like bailifuma from bunyala, babutu from bagisu etc.
ReplyDeleteBukusu has assimilated many clans from other tribes. For example Baafu from Banyala, Baengele from the same, Bakangala from Samia etc
DeleteThe answer, as Amos puts it, is assimilation. Some clans completely adopted Bukusu way of life, others still chikholo che Burwa,Ebunyana etc
DeleteThe list should have all the clans residing among the Bukusu irrespective of the origin since they have been assimilated among the bukusu, speak lubukusu, intermarried and have national identity cards registered as bukusu subtribe of Luhya. My thoughts and subject to polite correction.
DeleteThat's correct indeed.
DeleteNabone nolile engo....sikuka syefwe sichililile khubao
ReplyDeleteNakhusiima nabi nabi
DeleteSome goodwork, now tell me the relationship between bukusu tribes aligned to kalenjin
ReplyDeleteThis questions needs a 100,000 word essay haha. Short answer, assimilation
Deletewhere is bamurwa babecheteka?
ReplyDeleteI should really update the list :-)
DeleteAm from Batukwiika Baluleti clan and am seriously engaged to my fiance from Batukwiika Bakwanga clan are liable to get married.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so cz ese omwiwana mtukwiika mkwangwa
DeleteYou and your finance are from "cousin" clans...as for married, khuyiima emonyo khubasakhulu
DeleteOmwami senabone batilu bamakambo tah
ReplyDeleteNdamwatakho, oriooooo
DeleteOrio muno kuka. Lakini senabone Bachebukwa, balukulu nende bakokho tawe. Why? Bachebukwa were totally assimilated from Maasai ancestry/lineage in the 18th century and occupied Chebukwa area before they moved to Kibunde and later in the late 18th century and early 19th century moved to Chelekei area near Bahai in Kimilili Rural location where they live to today.
ReplyDeleteAm glad you are informed..the list may not be enough, I will update with time
DeleteDo we have a bukusu dictionary?
ReplyDeleteyes.
Deletejust google there is an online copy, though veeery shallow
DeleteAm glad am being represented....Baala bakoyabe....
ReplyDeleteOrioo nakhusiima
DeleteEnter your comment...batukwika bakwangwa nende bakitang'a bayilana kweli womutahi
ReplyDeleteTawe, close relatives. Nabukwangwa, Luleeti, Nambobi, Nakitang'a are wives of Tukwiika
Deletebakwanga, bakitanga newnde baluleti( boosi bakituika) bali waena?
ReplyDeleteSome clans sound more Kalenjin than Luiyah
DeleteBakhoye babe khulist...sons of different mothers in Tukwiika household
Deleteese omumurwa omwicheteka, am i Bukusu?
ReplyDeleteEwee khubolelekho khubone, namwe khurebe kuka
DeleteI have read elsewhere about the Famous Bawambwa Bachebeni. The likes of Zephania Wachiye (Colonial Judge in Kabuchai Court), Joseph Wabuyele, John Musundi (Coop Movement) and Matanda Wabuyele (CEO EPZ). WHY ARE THEY REFERRED TO AS FAMOUS.
ReplyDeleteWe tend to associate with famous people, like these who were perhaps in civil service or influencial positions
DeleteKimilimo kimilayii, not comprehensive, mine is captured but Basiambi is missing out.
ReplyDeleteSure, not so conclusive
DeleteCan someone tell us about why Bawambingwa should be missing on the list. I have always believed it should be part of Bukusu clans.
ReplyDeleteThe list is not veeeery conclusive wase
DeleteAlso baneembe is missing from the list
ReplyDeleteWill probably add
DeleteAre the batura really a bukusu clan?
ReplyDeletesubject to further research...but affliated to Babukusu
DeleteI want to know if Baemba (bukusu) are the same as Bayemba/Baseya (banyala)
ReplyDeleteCan they intermarry?
Baemba and Bayemba are different. Intermarriage is possible
DeleteGood
